Have you ever had someone hold open a door for you? It feels good doesn't it? That rush of joy and gratitude means something magical is happening inside your body. If you hold a door open for someone else, you may remember when someone did the same for you and how that person must feel. It's a rush of joy.
Kindness comes with gratitude and those actions, smiles and verbal sounds of appreciation, make a huge difference to us and the people around us in more ways than we might realise.
This two-minute video explains some of the scientific studies and benefits of being kind.
The 5 reasons
There are more than a million reasons to be kind but these are five we can all start doing right now.
"You'll find that life is still worthwhile, if you just smile." - Charlie Chaplin
Smiling feels amazing. There's no question about how powerful a smile can be and when you smile at another Hooman, they will almost always smile back. Some people are grumpy and there's nothing we can do about that but for most, it's a contagious and powerful thing. It releases happy vibes into our brainboxes, shows people we are confident and can even help you get a job.
2. Showing Gratitude
“Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough.” – Oprah Winfrey
What are you grateful for today? Gratitude is known to release happy chemicals into our bodies, which make us bounce and laugh and smile more. Who wouldn't want to do that? Do you like smiling and bouncing and laughing? We do! A good tip is to write down something each morning, that you were grateful for the day before. This way you can remember all the good stuff and you'll always be thinking about what to be grateful for today!
The most exciting way to express gratitude, is when you show another person how grateful you are for them being around. It doubles the joy and makes life feel much better.
3. Talking to ourselves the way we would talk supportively to a child
"Children are human beings to whom respect is due, superior to us by reason of their innocence and of the greater possibilities of their future. " - Maria Montessori
If you ever find yourself looking in the mirror and frowning or looking down at your big belly and feeling sad, just remember that if you did that to a child you'd be hurting their feelings. We sometimes forget, that when we talk to ourselves we're not really saying the things WE think but more what others might have said, or things we might have seen on the tellybox or in a magazine.
The next time you hear that little voice in your head, telling you you're not good enough or your nose is too big or your ears are too small, just flip it round and imagine saying it to a happy, carefree child. What would it do? Would it make them cry?
Be kind to yourself. It will bring you more confidence, love, joy and happiness.
4. Treating Life With Respect
“A person’s a person, no matter how small.” - Dr. Seuss
Respect is essential if we want to live together in our world. It's the foundation of creativity, problem-solving, togetherness and most of all kindness. Respect is something we earn and something we can show. We can achieve amazing things when we show respect for ourselves and others, so it's important to keep remembering this even if you don't agree with someone.
“No one has ever become poor by giving.” - Anne Frank
The good you give, will always come back in abundance. More people can make the world a better place by giving and living selflessly.
Getting a gift feels good but giving a gift feels amaaaaaaaaaazing. We feel happier spending money on other people, than we do spending money on ourselves. Amazingly, we spark our happy chemicals and they fill us up with rainbows when we gift, give and show generosity to others.
Maya Angelou said it beautifully: "As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself and the other for helping others."
Here are some ideas for giving:
And so those are 5 reasons why kindness heals not only our body, mind and spirit but also society.
